Turning Crayons into Crayon Shapes

IMG_8155

I know this project has been done like a thousand times BUT I have never done this. Max has been feeling a little under the weather, so I thought this might keep him calm for like 5 minutes or so. It worked!

Now, I bought new boxes of crayons. Yes, don't judge, it was just easier.  Since, Max has never liked crayons or art or drawing or crafting, I don't have used crayons laying around my house. Hence the new.  I also bought this "cookie" pan from Walmart.  I wanted Christmas shapes.

Basically this is the craft in a nut shell:
1. Peel paper off crayons. Why this was hard, I don't know. Maybe it was my cheap-o crayons but the paper was hard to peel off. Like 5 year old hard.

2. Break crayons into small pieces.

3. Spray cookie sheet/muffin tin with cooking spray. This is the label from the pan I bought at Walmart.

4. Place broken crayon 3/4 full into cookie sheet spaces or muffin tins.

5. It looks better if you place red-orange-pink-yellow together and blue-green-purple together. Otherwise, the colors can run together and make brown.
6. Preheat oven to 350 and cook for about 8 minutes.

7. When they are 100% liquid, take out of the oven. Let them cool for a couple of minutes and then place in the freezer for faster cooling or not.

I love it! My boys are older now, but sometimes I can sweet-talk them into doing things like this with me.
Enjoy it...

OK, we are totally doing this. This is right up Coop's alley!

How many crayons did you buy- like a huge box or more like 12 or 24?

Do you think there is any way that a ribbon could be attached? Because these would be cool to hang on Coop's Christmas tree!

This way looks SO much better than my alphabet way. Argh! Very pretty. And I like the idea of using them as ornaments!

WE must have been thinking the EXACT same thing... I just did my first batch last week... it was super easy, but I those little lables were hard to pull off from used crayons... so it's a good thing you used new ones. I can't believe Max doesn't like arts and crafts... bet this activity changed his mind.

THREE CHEERS for color!!

I had the same thought as Katie: these would be so great as ornaments. If they're still kinda liquid-y when removed from the oven, you probably could press some kind of wired ribbon holder into it, if not the ribbon itself.

I was just wondering if the pan is still good after doing this or do the crayons ruin it?

Thanks for sharing!

Just wanted to add that the wilton treat bags are a perfect fit for this size crayon. Come see what we did with them here http://favorswithlove.blogspot.com/2009/12/christmas-crayons.html.

Thanks so much for this tutorial. Love it!
