Painting Metal Patio Furniture

I have this 15 year old metal patio set. Nothing special but I like it. Unfortunately, it is showing it's age and my neglect. I think it was once black or maybe a grayish-black but it had started to rust and deteriorate.  I don't have a very good "before" picture that shows truly how bad the table looked but it was ugly.

I thought about spray painting the table but then I remembered my grandfather having some of his old patio furniture "dipped" or "powdered coated".  So, I called my local auto paint repair store (I called Maaco).  I guess any auto paint shop would be willing to help, so call around.  I paid $100 to have the table painted black + 4 chairs.  I could not be happier. It took 4 days. I delivered my table and picked it up.

So, the next time you have metal furniture to paint, consider calling a car auto body shop!

Great timing on this post! I'm having the same issue right now, but I have had a couple of the little round feet oxidize and actually break off. Any suggestions about what to do about those? Maybe the Maako people could weld them. Thanks so much!

what a great idea -
i have an old metal bed that needs the same thing done but a metal place wanted 400$ to dip it -
I will try a body shop
thanks for the awesome idea

I never would have thought of that! I just recently acquired a little metal bistro set from my mom and I am thinking of painting it. I might have to look around for a body shop! Thank you for the tip!

I see some super cute cushions back there!! Tip for ya? Invest in some good UV fabric spray or those cute cushions will look like sh@! after a season of sun. :)

P.S.- Since we're talking patios, tell me what you think about my new umbrella.

Oh yeah! I can totally see the amazing difference. And I bet this will last a whole lot longer than spray paint. Good choice.

Great idea thanks for sharing. I have also heard of some folks who have had their front doors painted with auto paint to withstand the weather better.

I have heard of appliances also painted by auto shops.

So awesome! I am totally in need of this, as I tried to paint a set myself without first sanding it. Did they get the old paint off for you, or did you do it?
